Trolley tours, in Decorah?

WhatWereLoving_LogoThat’s right! We’re pretty smitten with Holly the Trolley, and word on the street is that her sister Molly is jumping in on all the fun this summer too! Perhaps you’ve seen the red antique-style trolley cruising the streets of Decorah on beautiful summer afternoons, wedding parties rolling along merrily. Our friends at De Novo Barn have doubled down on the four-wheeled trolley fun for this summer, and now you can join in too!

The Decorah Trolley Company is working to add a series of guided trolley tours throughout the season. Offerings and excursions will include a “Narrated Scenic and Historic Tour”, “Decorah Eagle’s Nest and Fish Hatchery”, and a “Brewery, Tap Room, and Winery” tour. So hop on board – from showing visitors around town, to a fun date activity, or gathering up the gang and having a ball – this will be a great way to take in the sights of Decorah and Winneshiek County.

Check the website to sign up for one of the local trolley tours and keep an ear out for Holly and Molly’s clanging bells!

What We’re Loving: Luther College Writers Festival

Obviously, we love to write around here, so we’re excited when a group of writers come together to share ideas and stories! Such a time is coming up here in Decorah at the Luther College Writers Festival.

The Luther College Writers Festival will feature some of our most celebrated literary greats – Erik Larson, Jane Hamilton, Bret Anthony Johnston, Charles Baxter, and others – alongside up and coming writers such Anais Duplan and Gretchen Marquette.

“I’m excited for the sheer number of writers gathering in one place to celebrate writing and literature,” says Festival organizer and local writer Keith Lesmeister. “Where else in the world can you talk about those things you love – writing and literature – with like-minded people who love words and sentences and as much you do?”

The Luther College Writers Festival will be held (where else?) on the Luther College campus September 23-24, 2016. The general public can register for the festival for $50 (discounts for Luther faculty and staff, and all students)! The festival schedule includes readings, craft lectures, two keynote addresses, a book fair, and more. Register today!

What We’re Loving: Oktoberfest

WhatWereLoving_LogoDecorah Oktoberfest!

This past spring, we discovered that we LOVED Galena, Illinois-based band the Driftless Sisters, so we were SUPER excited to find out that Decorah’s own Water Street Music Series was going to be hosting them for their fifth season opener Saturday, September 24. But the excitement didn’t stop there, driftlesssistersbecause the WSMS organizers announced that it isn’t just going to be a Driftless Sisters concert…it’s going to be an Oktoberfest celebration, and there will be two more great bands – Them Coulee Boys and The Big Payback!

WSMS is partnering with the Oneota Community Co-op for this shindig, and they’re even closing the 300 block of Water Street right in front of the Co-op to make it happen. We are stoked!
oktoberfestlogoThe “festive fall party” runs from 5 to 10 pm and features local beer, aforementioned awesome regional bands, and delicious food.
